When on vacation, your homes light switches remember how they were turned on and off when you were at home, and repeat a varied but similar pattern making it appear you are still at home.

Wireless surveillance can be had that monitors and even records audio/video action of anyone coming to your door, or breaking into your home, when it is armed.
Automatic telephone dialers are available for people with limitations, that would otherwise prevent them from calling out, to dial a prescribed phone list if intrusion is detected or at the press of a button, if someone in the house needs help.
Dial in telephone controllers are also available to send commands to your lights or devices from your office or mobile phone. This enables you to initiate appliances and lighting in preparation for your arrival home.
