Instructions

It is assumed you already have and know how to use the Synergy Server application for PC/Linux. If you don't have it, please visit the Open Source Synergy webiste to download and setup the server application.

NOTE: SynergyOSX only works on Mac OSX v10.3 and greater (Panther)

PC Server
Launch synergy.exe

Check the Server radio button.

Host Names

You need to enter in your host name for both server and client computers in the Screens field.

Server Host Name (PC)
Here's how to get the host name for the server on a PC.
On the desktop, right-click My Computer and select Properties. Then choose the Computer Name tab and you will find the host comptuer name in the
"Full computer name" field.

Client Host Name (PC)
To get the host name for the client computer on a PC.
On the desktop, right-click My Computer and select Properties. Then choose the Computer Name tab and you will find the host comptuer name in the
"Full computer name" field.

Client Host Name (Mac)
Launch SynergyOSX. It will tell you the client host name once it's booted up.

Setup Screens on Server
Then, click the host name you just entered in the screens field and choose under Layout the position of the screen and the screen host name you wish displayed. Do this for each host in the Screens field.

Typically, you should have for each line in the screens field, a designate host for the Left and for the Right. Click each line in the Screen field and make sure this is correct!

Next click the Test button.
It will open a DOS window and the first three lines should read:

INFO: opening screen
INFO: screen (Your Screen Name) shape...(etc..)
NOTE: starting server

As you drag you mouse off the end of the screen you will get another:

INFO: switch from ...(etc)

Leave the app in TEST mode and go to the client.
Many have asked how to setup the server on a PC. Here are some basic instructions on how to make it happen.

How to set Synergy up on 2 computers
One is a server and the other the client. The server is the one the keyboard and mouse is attached to. Currently, only a PC or Linux machine can be the server. These instructions are for setting up the server on a PC.
PC Client

Launch synergy.exe

Check the Client radio button and put in the Host name of the server computer (see above for how to get the host name for a PC)

Press the Test button and see if it connects.

If it all works, then just press the Start Button on the Server first, then on the client. Remember, Server must be running in order for the client to connect!
SynergyOSX Client Instructions for Mac

In order for the synergyc client to run correctly, there are two settings which are important.

1) The Host Name for the OSX client must be set correctly on the PC or Linux Synergy server. Please use the Host Name provided by SynergyOSX. The MacOSX IP Address is provided in case you would like to test ping from the PC/Linux Synergy Server.

2) You'll need to provide the Host Name or IP Address (either will do) of the PC/Linux Server. Enter it into the Synergy Server Name combo box button. In many cases, the Host Name will not work, and you shold enter the IP Address of the PC/Linux Server instead. Press the Test button to make sure you are connected.

You may enter as many different Synergy Server names/addresses as you like (just in case you're using a MacOSX laptop and connecting to many different PC/Linux servers). Pressing the return key after entering the name/addres, will save it to a local preferences file. You may delete a name/address by pressing the Del button.

After synergyc is launched, you may close the SynergyOSX application and the synergyc daemon will still run. If you wish to shut it down, launch the SynergyOSX application again and press the Stop Synergy button. It will find all instances of synergyc running and force them to quit.

Note: The Mac SynergyOSX application is created by Chipp Walters, Altuit, Inc. and is licensed under the GPL.
Testing
Remember, first press the Test button on the server, then press Start Synergy button on the Mac, or the Test button on the PC.

If all is configured properly, you will then be able to move back and forth between screens with your mouse. Then Stop Synergy (Mac) and quit the test modes for the PC. Now, press the Start button on the server. Once started, it will minimize to the sytem tray, next press the Start Synergy button on the Mac or the Start button on the PC client. Everything should work fine.

If the Mac goes to sleep, you'll have to shut down and restart Synergy. Remember, ALWAYS start the server first, then the client.
