Sections
You can click on the new web you built and then choose 'Add New Section to Web' from the left task area. Copy the first Section name from your outline, and paste it into the Section Name field. If you want you can have some introductory text in the Section Description field.
Items: Item Name
Now with the newly created Section still selected in the tree view, choose Add New Item to Section from the left task area. You can now copy and paste the title of your item into the field Item Name. Remember if you don't want to show a horizontal line between this item and the previous one, then you should uncheck th check box next to Item Name.
Items: Item Description
Next, copy and paste your text into the Item Description Text field. There is a 'T' button above the filed. Once clicked it will display your text in a small word processor called HTML Builder, where you can format it how you like. Do NOT use tabs as they create tables which will not render properly in the PDF document format. If you want to use tables, you should build them in a standard HTML editor, then copy and paste them into the Item Description Field and check the Use HTML checkbox below. Do NOT paste into the HTML Builder window! Once you've checked the Use HTML checkbox, you can then press the 'T' button and edit in HTML Builder.
Try not to be overly complex regarding your formatting. Remember, Hemingway trys it's best to auto format content for you. Generally, the less formatting the better. Try rendering a PDF and see what it looks like, then consider adding more formatting. From HTML Builder, you can use the Courier button to format code segments. There are also buttons for inserting copright, trademark, bullet and other symbols. The special symbol is a way of creating a space which cannot be broken, so words concatenated with it will wrap together or not at all.
Also, from within HTML Builder, you can colorize your type, though this may be problematic if you plan on printing out black and white. Typically, reserve color for calling specific attention to a warning or comment.
Items: Item Image
If you so choose, you may add a picture to an individual item. Hemingway works best with .JPG images. Click on the middle Item Image tab to view the image settings for the current item. You can drag/drop a .JPG file onto the image area to load it, or press the Browse button. You should check the Show Image checkbox. You can click the ImageGadget button to launch ImageGadget to create a screen capture, or add a text layer to your image.
You can double-click on the small image window to view the image full size. When full size, please take note of the size shown in the Preview window. In particular, you'll want to make sure your size is not larger than 590 pixels wide for the SwissBlackPDF template. If it is, you can either resize it using ImageGadget, or (preferred) change the Browser Width settings in HTMLtoPDF. The reason it is preferred to keep the original size is it will print out cleaner from a PDF. More on those settings later.
As mentioned before, there can be two different resolutions used in Hemingway. The small version can be viewed on the web, where it is desirable for the larger version to be printed (as printing has much higher resolution than screen display). So, here are the rules you'll want to follow regarding when/how to scale images for this template:
Rule 1. If an image is less than 400 pixels wide then upload the image and do not scale it.
Rule 2. If an image is greater than 400 pixels wide then upload the image, change the image size to Large (dropdown menu) and then link to the image by going to the 'Item Links' tab; checking the checkbox "Show Link", check the radio button "Full Size Item Picture" and choose "Image is the Button" from the "Link is Accessed by:" dropdown menu.
Take note of the largest width image you upload. If it is less than 590, then you can set your Browser Width settings in HTMLtoPDF to 800. If it is larger, they you'll need to increase your Browser Width settings from 800 by the difference between it and 590.
For example:
If your widest imaage is 950 pixels, then you'll want to set your Browser Width to:
(950-590) + 800 = 1160
You should always render your web to a PDF to be sure an image is not 'pushed' off the edge of the page.
Wrapping Text around an Image:
Also, you should note the following rule for all the Swiss pdf templates: If an image is uploaded and linked to a larger image, then the Item Description Text will be drawn ABOVE or BELOW the image depending upon the Swiss pdf template used. If you use SwissBlackPDF, then the image is drawn BELOW the text, if you use SwissPDF then it is drawn ABOVE the text. If the image is uploaded and not linked to a larger version of itself, then text will flow around the image. This gives you the ability to control how text is displayed around your image. So, if you're seeing too much white space to the right of your image, consider NOT linking it to a larger version of itself.
Submit
Remember to Press the Submit button on the top right of the item pane to save your data! You don't have to press it until you've finished with all three Item tabs, but it's important not to forget! After you submit, you may build if you like, but it's not necessary to build after each Submit.
It is recommended to use a default template at this stage, because they render significantly faster than the custom templates. You can always change to a custom template later. So, choose Corporate Light as your default template for now and you can build your web and view it.
Finish Importing
Continue forward importing content as you go. You can import all your text first (recommended) and then add pictures, or add your pictures as you go. In either case it's easy to go back and edit and move around any Items or Sections you have created. See the documentation for how to copy and move Sections and Items.
