Converting your Website to PDF

Creating a PDF document from a web involves:

1) Choosing a PDF compatible Style template
2) Rendering the web with the PDF style template
3) Launching the HTMLtoPDF plugin and setting it up properly
4) Click the Build PDF button on HTMLtoPDF
5) Wait for HTMLtoPDF to download all files and build a local PDF file
6) Review your new PDF document.
Set the Template After you are finished importing all your content, you should build the web and look at it. Check it for spelling errors and other mistakes. Once you are happy with the rendered website, you may convert it to a custom template like SwissSP. Change the style, build and view it and make sure it looks great. Remember, if you want to add links, forms, downloadable files, add these in a 'last' section, separate from the others. This way, we can remove it from the convert to PDF process.

Once you are satisfied with the look and feel of your web, you may want to export it as described earlier. You can use this exported version as both a backup and a local version of your document.

Next, you should set the style of the web to 'SwissBlackPDF' and build it. Now view it and make sure it looks OK.
Launch HTMLtoPDF With your Web selected in the middle tree column, click the HTMLtoPDF button on the upper task area of HemPC. If you don't see the button, chances are you are on a Mac and this plugin has not yet been made available for the Mac.

If this is the first time you've run this plugin, you'll get a message "Please Wait..." as it downloads the necessary resources for converting to PDF.

IMPORTANT:
First make sure the 'Book' radio button is selected and not the 'Web Page' radio button!

You will see a list of all the websites URL's in the Input Files field. You should find any Sections in the list which you don't want printed. When hovering your mouse over a line in the field, you will see the full name of the URL and can then decide whether to print it or not. As mentioned before, Sections with forms, or links or file downloads should be removed as these have no equivalent in a PDF document.

To remove a file, click on it, and press the 'Delete Files' button.

The Output Tab On the Output screen, you need to do a couple of things. First, Browse for a file location to store locally the PDF you will build. HTMLtoPDF downloads the files from the Hemingway website and then builds a PDF locally on your machine. If after you've viewed it, you may chose to upload it as a linked document on your website. Second, if you're planning on professionally printing the document, then select NONE for compression. If you want the document to be viewed online, select Fast. Setting the JPEG Quality to a higher number increases the image quality and file size of your PDF document.

The Page Tab The Page Tab is where you set your page sizes for your PDF. It defaults to 8.5" W x 11.0" T. If you want to change it, you can use the Page Size dropdown menu. Check the 2-Sided checkbox if you intend to print on both sides of the paper. If you're planning on professionally printing the document, you'll want to have at least 0.5" margins all around with 0.75" margin for the gutter (Left).

You can set the Header and Footer as you like, but it is recommended for this template to set them at:
Header: Blank, Blank, Chapter Title
Footer: Blank, 1,2,3..., Blank

Leave Number Up as 1.

The TOC Tab Table of Contents is 2 levels. The Title at this time cannot be changed. It is recommended for this template to set the Header and Footer to Blank all across.

The Colors Tab Everything stays as is except for the Link Style dropdown menu should be set to Plain.

The Fonts Tab You can click on a field directly to enter a number. It is recommended for this template to set the following:

Base Font Size: 10
Line Spacing: 1.2
Body Typeface: Helvetica
Heading Typeface: Helvetica
Header/Footer Size: 7.0
Header/Footer Font: Helvetica
Character Set: iso-8859-1
uncheck "Embed Fonts"

The PDF Tab You may choose to uncheck the include links checkbox on the PDF tab. Leave the rest of the settings on the PDF tab alone.
The Security Tab Leave as the default settings
The Options Tab Click on the words Browser Width and set the Browser Width to 800. Then, if your PDF file has images off the page to the right, increase this number. If you get Error messages saying the image is too large, but when you check it in the PDF it may be correct. In this case, ignore the Error messages.

For more information and some formulas for setting the Browser Width, please check the Section Importing Content and the item, Items: Item Image.

Leave the other settings on the tab alone.

Rendering the PDF Once all the settings are set, you can press the Build PDF button and then wait as all the files are downloaded and rendered locally. When it's finished, a message telling you so will be displayed. You will be offered the opportunity to view it, but decline and instead find the file and double-click on it. It will then be opened in your native PDF viewer and not a web page (the default). This is faster and easier to work with. Review your PDF in the viewer taking note of any issues. If necessary, you can go back to HemPC while leaving the HTMLtoPDF open, edit any Items and rebuild. If you change a name of a Section, you'll need to close HTMLtoPDF and relaunch it.

Continue this process until you are happy with the results. Once finished, BE SURE AND RESET THE STYLE OF THE WEB TO THE ORIGINAL WEB STYLE (NOT PDF STYLE) SO THAT VIEWERS WILL BE ABLE TO ACCESS AND NAVIAGE IT!
Troubleshooting HTMLtoPDF Obvious Errors:

If you see a dark bar across the top of the first page, you forgot to select the 'Book' radio button on the input tab.

If no pages rendered at all you may have entered an incorrect size custom size in the Page tab. Make sure and include 'in' for inches.

If an image or text runs off the right sicde of the page, you need to set your Browser Width to a larger number in the Options tab. See the item entitled, Items: Item Image in the Importing Content section for more information on setting Browser Width.

There are a number of Error codes which may be generated. These are typcially due to an incorrect setting. See below:

Error Codes:

ERR002: Error: no pages generated! (did you remember to use webpage mode?)

Cause: You are not using a 'PDF' type template or you haven't yet built the web! Please change the style to PDF and build.
-
No table of contents generated and a black bar across the top

Cause: You forgot to check 'Book' on the Document Type (Input Tab)
-
ERR012: Unable to write document file - Permission denied

You have the PDF file you are trying to build already open. Please close the file and build again.
-
ERR014: Table on page XX to wide - truncation or overlapping may occur!

Cause: An image or table is wider than the page. First check the PDF and make sure this is so. If not, then ignore the message. If so, then increase the Browser Width under the Options Tab.
-
ERR404: Not Found

Cause: The website you are trying to render is a restricted access web. Please unlock the web (click the Red lock icon so that it turns to blue)
Other PDF tips If you have Adobe Acrobat Standard (or better), you can convert your PDF document into Word format. You may also use Acrobat to reduce the filesize of your document for web viewing. ScanSoft also makes an inexpensive converter from PDF to Word.

Try and launch your PDF with Acrobat Viewer and not in a webpage, as it is faster for viewing.
