About the Build Process
There are a few concepts you should know about how Hemingway builds and stores webs and files. Each Section text and Item text, file or image you upload gets stored in a database. Actually, in the case of images and files, a pointer to them is stored in the database, the actual image or file is stored in a 'staging' folder, ready to be moved to the main web folder when you issue the 'Build Web' command.
When a user is created on a Hemingway server, a 'webroot' folder is created for the user. For each web the user creates, another folder (the Web folder) with the name of the web is created and inside that folder is a folder called 'staging.'
When a web is built, Hemingway does the following:
1) It looks inside the respective Web folder and deletes all files EXCEPT
a.) those which are already listed in the Hemingway database for that web;
b.) those ending in a _x.* suffix. So a file named "fred_x.jpg" would not be deleted, but fred.jpg would.
* this also means all .htm files are deleted and must be rendered from scratch
2) It looks through all of the data for the web, and then builds all HTML pages based upon the current template.
3) It transfers any files which are in the staging folder to the Web folder
Flat File Access and Backing Up
So, all files necessary to display the web site are in a single folder: the 'Web folder.' This makes it very easy to transfer all of those files. And, because every Hemingway page refers to the other pages using 'relative' paths, and they are all HTML, they can then run from any server, or hard disk, or CD-ROM. To do this, you'll need to export the files and you'll have to use the browser (not HemPC) interface.
Go to Altuit and click the "login" link on the front page. Login using your username and password, then click the 'settings' button next to the web you would like to export.
At the top of the next page, you will see an 'Export this Web' button. Press it and you will go to a download page where you can download the entire web as a .ZIP file. Included in the .ZIP file is a 'hemweb.xml' file which is the schema for your web in xml format. Though this file is not necessary to run your website from a disk or CD-ROM, it is valuable if you ever want to import it back into Hemingway. So, think of this file as a 'backup' for your new website. Backup often!
