Quick Glass Button

This tutorial was made using an older version of Photoshop, but can easily be recreated in newer versions as well. We have chosen to keep the reference to the older version as many users still use it.
I'm using a 150 x 150 image Create a new layer then choose the Eliptical Selection Marquee and while holding down the alt and shift keys, drag a circle selection area out from the middle as shown.
Next, choose the color of the Glass you want to render. Pick a light and dark shade for it. Then select the circular gradient tool and fill as shown.
Enter QuickMask mode and do the following:
1. click the original layer to make a selection
2. Choose the selection tool and place it over the selected area
3. drag it 1/3 the way down
Select Back as the foreground color and fill the selected area with Black. Then DeSelect All, but stay in QuickMask mode.
Choose the Minimum Filter from the Filters Menu. Choose a number (3) which will compress the existing crescent selection a few pixels inside the original circle. Then exit QuickMask mode.
Reset colors then Create a New Layer and do a linear gradient fill between white at the top and a dark gray at the bottom.
DeSelect All and Change the Layer settings to 'Screen' and adjust the transparency to suit.
Now add a soft drop shadow as shown in the image above. Note the shadow falls directly under the glass ball.
Add some text... Here I used the Webdings font (letter 'i') and the same drop shadow settings....and we're just about done!
Voila! Last, I merge down the visible layers, reduce the image 50% and do an unsharp mask to sharpen it up a bit.
Here it is!
